Community guidelines

A good place for strange questions is one where people feel safe to wonder out loud.

  1. Every question is welcome

Silly, serious, scientific, philosophical or completely random. If it made you stop and think, it belongs here. Nobody needs credentials to ask or answer.

  2. Be kind to people, curious about ideas

Disagree with an answer, not with the person who wrote it. Assume good faith, and remember that everyone was confused about something once.

  3. Say how sure you are

“I think…”, “one theory is…” and “I'm not sure, but…” are great ways to start. Make clear what's a guess and what's a fact.

  4. Back up facts when you can

A link to a good source helps others check your claim and learn more. Summarise it in your own words, and quote sparingly.

  5. No harassment, hate or spam

Personal attacks, discrimination, advertising and repeated off-topic posts will be hidden by moderators.

  6. Respect other people's work

Don't paste copyrighted texts; link to them instead. Homework questions are fine if you're trying to understand, not just collecting answers.

Reporting

Use “Report” in the ⋯ menu on any question, answer, source or comment. Only you and the moderators can see a report. Moderators can hide content; hidden content stays visible to its author so they understand what happened.

About answers

Answers are people's ideas, not official verdicts. The asker can mark a favourite answer, but that's a personal pick and doesn't mean it has been checked.
